Bears! Oh my!

There are bears all over New Bern! We also found Elvis and a pirate!

This is the Bill of Rights bear

New Bern, NC

Hi from New Bern!

Our trip here was pretty uneventful, with only a seahorse, lighthouse and sea monster along the way.

Right after we arrived, some baby ducks came to introduce themselves and beg for bread crust. You know I couldn't resist.

New Bern was founded in 1710 by Swiss immigrants. It is named for Bern, Switzerland. The city is beautiful!
New Bern is hometown to our friends, Hiroshi and Val Ajas.

There is a very old Episcopal church, which still uses a silver communion set and Bible given to them by King George II. There is an outdoor memorial chapel on the site of the original church. We're going to church there Sunday morning.

We found the coolest hardware store! It has everything you could ever think of! There is a Governor's Palace here, built for Governor Tryon in the 1700's. Lots of beautiful, well-maintained old buildings - and all kinds of shops and restaurants. We had lunch at Morgan's Tavern and Grill.

Since Bern apparently means "bear", the city had bear statues created and placed all over. There were so many that I'm making a separate blog entry for them.

Leaving Beaufort

Hi everyone!
We stayed at Beaufort for a few nights because of the bad weather that was expected. We got some high winds, but it wasn't all that bad for us. The people who did get the awful weather are in our prayers. While we were in Beaufort we did laundry and grocery shopping again, and had some canvas repaired.

The update is late because Verizon had a glitch with their 3g over the last couple of days. We were relieved that it wasn't operator error! The 3g is working again, which is good because we got to Skype with Olivia again. She has taken some steps, but of course wasn't interested in showing off last night.

The Maritime Museum in Beaufort was excellent. I took one photo inside - of a "stuffed" great white - but flash photography wasn't allowed. And my camera flashed. They had a display of Blackbeard items, which is about to expand. Edward Teech, aka Blackbeard, prowled the coast of North Carolina. His flagship, "Queen Anne's Revenge", supposedly went down near Beaufort. Very interesting!

I have to make some wildlife friends everywhere I go... This time it was a heron that came to fish every morning on the dock near us. Today we are going inland a little to New Bern, NC. We will update you from there!

Such a pretty bird!

My one contraband photo - the shark was really caught off Beaufort.
