Welcome!

We are making the "Great Loop" - up the east coast, through the Great Lakes and into Canada, and then down the Mississippi and around Florida. It promises to be the adventure of a lifetime! We invite you to join us through our blog.

South Haven, MI

We're still in Bob's Country (Bob Dykema, that is). We got into South Haven and had time to do some exploring before having dinner with Bob's sister Pam and her husband Ted. There was a cool downtown area within easy walking distance of the marina, as well as a maritime museum. The museum had some wonderful ship models, including one of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Outside, they had a Coast Guard exhibit, a tug and a tall ship. If you look carefully at the photos, you might see a man working up in the rigging!

Dinner was at Clementine's with Pam and Ted. Bob told us that he went there for the perch, so Steve and I ordered the perch  (it was great, Bob) and Chris tried the burger. Very good food and wonderful conversation. We are now convinced that Bob knows and/or is related to almost everyone we meet around here. We topped the evening off with homemade ice cream from Turner's. It was sooo good!

We left this morning and made it to St. Joseph. The weather sources were all calling for 1 foot seas, but it sure was a bumpy 1 foot. From here, we will pick our day and cross to Chicago!

Before we leave Holland, here is a sunset to enjoy...

And a sunrise as well...

Heading south.

Coming into South Haven harbor

I've been wondering what this was on the walls going out to the lighthouses. Chris tells me that it is a walkway for the lighthouse keepers to use when the lake level is high.

Steve might want one of these chairs

A beautiful synagogue with an awesome garden

And the other side

Model of the Edmund Fitzgerald

This model is of the barque Le Griffon that was in these waters in the late 1600's

We decided that we wouldn't want to be nearby when this whistle blew.

These fenders are pretty cool - made from weaving rope.

There is a man just below the radar

This building kind of reminded us of Fish Town
