A Visit with Chris and Remy

We had a great weekend in Chattanooga with Chris and Remy. We took advantage of having his car here and went to see Ruby Falls and Lookout Mountain. We also did some shopping and had a good time just hanging out with our boy.

This time we stayed at the docks east of the aquarium, near the fountain. We have felt very safe and have had no incidents other than the usual speed boats throwing wakes. Chris got in around 10pm Friday. Saturday morning we headed for Ruby Falls. We didn't really know much about it, but Betty (from The Cooper) said that it was worth every penny. Sounded good to us...

It really was a spectacular sight. The rock formations were amazing - and because of the lighting and pathways, I enjoyed them without feeling claustrophobic. I was also grateful for the elevator. The cave is about 26 stories underground - not a big fan of stairs. It is hard to imagine that water and time can create the kind of sights we saw. There were "bee hives", a "donkey's backside", a "steak and potatoes" formation and many others. The falls is in a "room" by itself, and the walkway takes you around behind it and back out. The view looking straight up from underneath is pretty cool - I took a picture for you.

After the tour, we climbed the tower above the building and could see many miles of beautiful foliage. Chris commented several times about the beautiful leaf colors. I guess Atlanta is a week or so behind in color. We had a great Italian meal in the Bluff neighborhood. It is an artsy area of Chattanooga that overlooks the river. While there, we scoped out a bakery for Sunday breakfast. After going back to the boat to walk the dogs, we took off to buy a new stereo for the boat and some pet supplies. We had to drive a little distance to do that, but we found a neat rib place for dinner.

We did go to the bakery for breakfast, and then did our grocery shopping at a great Whole Foods-type grocery store. Over the weekend, we had time to hear all about Chris' new job in Atlanta. We also had time to play with Remi! He's such a great dog! It wasn't a long enough visit, but we were happy we got to see him at all. Now we need to get Rebecca on board again! We are hoping for Thanksgiving!

This formation is called "The Chandelier"

A better view of it.

The man who discovered Ruby Falls came in through this hole. Glad I didn't have to do that!

Back to Chattanooga

We have backtracked from Knoxville toy Chattanooga and we are looking forward to spending a weekend with Chris and Remy. The plan is to see Ruby Falls and Lookout Mountain, and then do some shopping and errands. We will try to find a really cool place for dinner tonight.

The trip back to Chattanooga was lovely. The leaves are becoming more vibrant every day. Since much of what we saw was the same as the trip up, I focused on the leaves for photographs. We met a couple in Knoxville, Bill and Joanne on Annuity, and immediately became friends. They are from Alabama and have been riding the rivers for a month. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them and picking their brains about the local rivers. Bill went through one of our guidebooks with Steve and told him everything we needed to know about the part of our journey from Chattanooga to Mobile Bay. We said goodbye to them Friday but will keep in touch.

It is my good luck that Sonata is here in Chattanooga for the weekend. Charlie and Bonnie also have a 42ft Grand Banks, and they have made some wonderful renovations to their boat. They upgraded the galley, put blinds throughout, and built a beautiful cabinet in the aft cabin. Bonnie has graciously agreed to let me photograph their upgrades for Steve's future reference. She told me that they loved their boat and didn't want a newer one, so they decided to make the one they had more comfortable. I quite agree!

We will post some new news and photos on Sunday. Have a great weekend!
