Welcome!

We are making the "Great Loop" - up the east coast, through the Great Lakes and into Canada, and then down the Mississippi and around Florida. It promises to be the adventure of a lifetime! We invite you to join us through our blog.

Peterborough, ON

We had a very busy day yesterday! Rebecca and I went looking for a dog groomer (it's that time again) and a fabric shop where I could find buttons. We had passed a pet supply place on the way to dinner the night before, so we stopped in to ask about groomers. They had a lady in the back who could do it, and everybody seemed to be entranced with our accents. The lady agreed to "do" Ryder at 9:00 this morning. We will get underway after she gets beautiful.

Becca and I also went by the bus station to get her ticket. The bus station is in walking distance and she and Steve just left to take her there. The bus will take her to Toronto, where she will fly home. She has a few stops, so her arrival is about 10:00pm in Savannah. Poor baby - at least she got to relax while she was here.

Steve called us while we were at the bus station yesterday to tell us about a farmer's market close to where we were. It was wonderful! I didn't need much, but it was well worth going. At one end, there was a woman playing a cello. At the other end, a man was playing a hammered dulcimer. So cool! We found a quilt store; they didn't have buttons (I needed some for a sweater I'm making for Olivia) but they did have a package of 2" pre-cut strips of fabric that I can play around with.

From the quilt shop, we set out for the next lock on the waterway. Rebecca will not be going through it with us, but we wanted her to see it. It is called a "lift lock" and is the highest lift lock in the world. Basically, two bathtub type chambers sit next to each other and as one goes up, one goes down. We took photos of the process from the outside. Later today I will take photos as a passenger! It was a very long walk up to that point, so we called a cab to take us back to the marina. Actually, we went to a fabric store right across the street from the marina - who knew it was so close? I found the buttons and went back to the boat for a nap.

We did domestic stuff the rest of the day - making granola, washing clothes, making dinner, etc. Throughout the day the park next to the marina had lots of activity. They have concerts on Wednesdays and Sundays through the summer. After dinner we took our chairs to the park for last night's performance. It was the Central Band, a Canadian military band. They were really good and the people around us were very nice!

It may be a day or two before we post again. We are having to rely on Wifi, and we will probably anchor out tonight.

I thought about getting one of these for Steve's rum bottle!

We didn't get a chance to eat on the roof!

We did eat here. The beer and sandwiches were awesome!

Gorgeous sunset our first night here.

An old train station.

McThirsty's Pub

We found lots of painted walls

Music at the farmer's market - how cool!

A hammered dulcimer is not something you see every day.

A memorial to the 2000 Irish immigrants who came to settle Peterborough.

The Peterborough city seal.

Beautiful bridge on the way to the lock

Provincial banners at the visitor's center

This is the lift lock. One chamber up, one down.

This is a tour boat that carries passengers through the lock and back. This is the return trip and they are coming to the front of the chamber.

This is the second boat going into the bottom chamber for the ride up.

Now everybody is in place and ready to go.

All done.

The band shell at the park. This is next to our marina.

A firefighter tribute in the park.

A beautiful venue for a concert

Reminded me of Savannah's "Picnic in the Park" but without the wine!

We started out with Ryder along, but the sign says no dogs on the grass - she is on the bricks. We decided to just take her back to the boat.

This little girl and her friend really liked the fireman.

Oh Canada!

A kind gentleman took our photo

A wonderful evening!
