Oak Bay

On August 8 we left Spider Bay at Little Current and cruised to Oak Point to anchor out. We found a beautiful anchorage at the back of the bay. There were a few other boats, but they were at the far side, so we had the place to ourselves. Steve and Ryder went out to explore, and reported that the beaver den nearby was an abandoned one. I guess I have a thing for sunsets and the ones here were stunning.

The next morning, we were discussing whether to move on and where we might go. As we were talking, Last Dance pulled into the bay. We met Glen and Jill back in March when they stayed at our dock for a couple of nights. They anchored and dinghied over and we had a wonderful time comparing notes on our experiences along the way. These two have been much more adventurous than we have. They have anchored out more for starters. They also brought kayaks and have paddled all over, which has given them more opportunity for seeing “critters”. Jill has been collecting rocks at various places and even found some rocks with fossils in them! Glen is the photographer on his boat, and has pictures of otters, bears, deer and eagles.

Later in the evening, we went over to their boat for cocktails. The guys discussed the weather report and decided that we had better stay put for a day or so. The winds were going to get fairly high and out of the west. As it turned out, it was a good decision. Last Dance pulled their anchor in the morning and moved across the small bay so they would be in more protected water. We had already thrown out a second anchor and decided to just stay put. The winds blew all day, with rain off and on. It was a good day for reading and sewing.  I was taking pictures throughout the day as well. I was fascinated by the clouds and light – I probably got a little carried away. In the evening, when the wind was finally dying down, we were rewarded with the most amazing rainbow we have ever seen. It was so big that I couldn’t get the whole thing in one shot with my camera. It was really bright and looked almost like there were two rainbows on top of each other. The moon was coming up as well, just beside the rainbow. It was awesome! In the morning we were able to get out into North Channel again and headed for Blind River and a marina.
