Welcome!

We are making the "Great Loop" - up the east coast, through the Great Lakes and into Canada, and then down the Mississippi and around Florida. It promises to be the adventure of a lifetime! We invite you to join us through our blog.

Baie Fine

On August 4, we left Kilarney for Baie Fine to anchor out. On the way, we listened to a radio broadcast from Roy Eaton. Each morning in July and August, he does a broadcast on channel 71. He gives you current weather information for the area, any local news you should know about and a little general news. Then he goes through each area of north Georgian Bay/North Channel, inviting boaters to call in with their boat name and location and their destination. It allows boaters to keep up with each other and see who might be in your area or going to the same place. Apparently he has done this for years. We even heard one guy wish his wife happy birthday!

Baie Fine is like a fjord. There are white quartz mountains on one side and high forested hills on the other. The guide books say that the exposed rock here is 3 billion years old. No wonder it looks a little wrinkled. Most of the bay is quite deep, and is fairly deep even up to the sides. There is a camp or resort as you first enter the bay, but very few cottages as you come farther in. It is a beautiful remote spot to anchor. We  put the dinghy in again and rode to the back of the bay to a portion called “The Pool”. We climbed the rocks to get a better view. Ryder is becoming a mountain dog as well as a sea dog. Mr. Evinrude (of boat motor fame) had a home here some years ago. I took pictures of the site, on an island in the bay, which still has a home on it. We don’t know if it is the original or not.

Several other boats anchored here, but there was plenty of room to spread out. We still felt like we had our own private spot. The guide books say that you could see various wildlife, to include bears, but we didn’t see anything except seagulls and geese. We keep looking!

It was deep water right up to the shore. And the water is clear enough to see the bottom at this depth.

This is the summer cottage that belonged to Mr. Evinrude.

This is called The Pool - it is at the back of Baie Fine

As we were leaving, we got close to the edge

You can see the rock below the surface

Instead of love bugs they have love dragon flies - they are everywhere!
