Kilarney, ON

On August 2, we went to Kilarney to stay at Sportsman’s Inn. The weather was perfect, and the water was very calm. We went through some beautiful areas along the way. There were LOTS of beaver dens along the shore, and we even saw one beaver. At first we thought it was a log, but then it dove and disappeared. The rocks in this area are a white quartz and the hills get bigger.

The waterway into Kilarney is marked by a very nice lighthouse. Most of the lighthouses are very utilitarian and generic, but this one is different. Going into Kilarney, there are lodges and marinas on both sides of the water. We stayed at one of the larger marinas in hopes of having wifi, but unfortunately it was not working properly. At least our cell phones were working most of the time. We were able to talk and text with Sara and we checked in on our friend Nancy. She had a wonderful report from her doctors, for which we are very thankful! We also heard from Dr. Jerry on Sweetgrass. He and two other boats have had maintenance issues and are traveling together to finish the Trent-Severn. We are in hopes that they will catch up with us before we go home in September to visit.

Kilarney has an LCBO (liquor store) with a dock! Next to it is a wonderful fish and chips stand, operating out of an old red bus. You walk up and place your order and they write your name on the box that will hold your food. It very much reminded me of Willie’s Weinie Wagon in Brunswick, GA. The fish was the best I’ve had up here! (and that's saying a lot) We walked around the small town (population 340), and visited the general store and bought some charts at a neighboring marina. Kilarney Mountain Lodge is a beautiful spot that boasts a nice pool, complete with giant chess set, and a ramp for sea planes. There were two planes there when we came in.

While we were in Kilarney, I finished Olivia’s sweater coat set. I’m a little tired of knitting for a while, so I have started a quilting project that I can do by hand. While Rebecca was with me in Peterborough, we found a quilting shop and I bought a batch of 2” strips of complementary fabrics. I am using them to make another table cloth for the boat.
