Welcome!

We are making the "Great Loop" - up the east coast, through the Great Lakes and into Canada, and then down the Mississippi and around Florida. It promises to be the adventure of a lifetime! We invite you to join us through our blog.

Pappy and Sa in Marathon

We were joined in Marathon by Pappy (my dad) and Sa. They arrived on Super Bowl Sunday with one of Sa's amazing home-made pound cakes. The Marathon Yacht Club, where we are staying, had a great Super Bowl Party with big screen TVs, wings, ribs and fried chicken. As those who watched know, the game was amazing!

The next day, we rode in their car to Key West - just to get the lay of the land. I took a few photos when we stopped for lunch at a wonderful place, but we didn't walk around much. There are lots of people here for the "busy season". When we got back to the Yacht Club, we found out that there was an informal pizza party on the porch that night.

Tuesday we drove to Islamorada. We plan to spend some time there visiting one of Steve's college friends, so we wanted to look around a little. Danny (Steve's friend) has a house there, and his wife is an artist who sells her (gorgeous!) work in a local shop. Check out sandekeil.com We went by the shop just to see. It is in an artist "village" that is SO much fun. For starters, they have a huge lobster sculpture out front. We found another great local place for lunch and headed back to Marathon.

Tuesday night we went to the Sunset Grille in Marathon. It is a huge tiki hut restaurant, overlooking a pool and the ocean. They had live music and great food - what more could you ask for? Well actually, we didn't get there til 7:00pm - so I guess we could ask for a sunset!

We enjoyed having Pappy and Sa aboard, but they wouldn't stay any longer. They left early Wednesday morning to get back to their real lives. I hope their tropical time recharged their batteries a little. They are two of the busiest folks I know!

These beautiful birds were outside Ibis, where we had lunch at Key West

These are live plants - how do they do that?

So here's the lobster at Rain Barrel (the artist village). The front view reminds me of the big bug in Men in Black

Really good onion rings - this thing was huge! Don't worry, we split it four ways...
