Key West

We took the short cruise from Boca Chica to Key West yesterday (Tuesday). I missed two great photo opportunities along the way... First of all a large sea turtle swam by, but I couldn't get my camera ready before it dove again. Then a dolphin was jumping completely out of the water, and I missed that too. You don't know exactly where they are going to come up and they aren't out of the water for very long. I got the tail end of a splash. I did get a photo of three dolphins riding the wake.

As we went around the southern end of Key West, you could see two big cruise ships docked. One of them was having a life-boat drill. People probably pay more attention to that these days... We walked around a bit and went over to Mallory Square near sunset. This is near where the cruise ships dock and is a popular place to watch the sunset. There are lots of street performers and vendors - a really fun place to go. We even saw a Capt. Jack Sparrow look-alike posing for photos with tourists.

Our marina is in a busy place, with charters, fishing boats and dinghies going by all the time. Yesterday we saw a border patrol boat with FOUR 225hp motors on the back. Today I saw a man in a tri-corner hat rowing a dinghy and Steve saw a remote controlled Navy craft that looked like a small destroyer. Pretty amazing.

Right now we are planning to stay a week, but Steve is loving the weather and all the boats. I may never get him to leave!

One last beautiful sunset at Boca Chica

And a gorgeous sunrise

Leaving for Key West

Coming around the end of Key West

Bet that water slide is fun!

These things are HUGE!

Coming into our marina

Border Patrol

A tarpon next to the boat

Waiting for the charter fishing boats to come in

A dinghy dock - there are lots of boats anchored around here

This is pretty cool - the bottom is clear and the big "dome" makes it darker inside so you can see the marine life

Of course we had to check this out

There are roosters and chickens everywhere - I love this place!

Capt. Jack Sparrow (but sadly, not Johnny Depp)

The next generation of Key West chickens

At Mallory Square - one of the street performers

This dog was like, "are you kidding me??", but she did it!

Then she got to sit back and watch her person perform

After the show, she got all the attention

This guy was a hoot!

From a ladder to a tall unicycle

And juggling swords and fire

Sunset at Key West

A small remote-control destroyer

That's what it looks like, anyway.

Now how often do you see a guy in a tri-corner hat rowing a boat?

The local Episcopal Church

Love the roosters

  1. We were to depart today to join you. Looking at the beautiful pictures bring back many memories of when Nanc and I have been there. I got Kath here PADI open water dive certificate there at the dive shop where you are slipped now. I have a picture hanging on our bedroom wall of one of the sailing sundown charters passing directly in front of the sunset when I was broken down in a C-130 waiting to carry supplies to Honduras to the hurricane survivors years ago. Nanc will enter Hospice tomorrow. We were really looking forward to our visit with you and Steve on Gemini. Speedy
