Beignets and the Garden District

On Friday we went back to the French Quarter to meet some friends from Savannah for beignets and cafe au lait at Cafe DuMonde. Harry, Gina, Hannah and Oliver Jenkins are living in Slidell now. We enjoyed the sweet treats while we caught up with each other, then we walked around the French Market for a while. Harry just finished the Episcopal Seminary at Sewanee and has accepted a call to a church in Slidell. We wish him and the whole family the very best.

After we left the Jenkins family, we went to a bookstore in the Garden District for a walking tour of the District. The bookstore was very cool and reminded me of Shaver's book store in Savannah. Our tour guide met us just outside the store and gave us some background on the Garden District before we started the tour. Our first stop was the cemetery. We couldn't go in because it was closed on Fridays, but we could see through the gate. The homes in the Garden District are beautiful and our tour guide had wonderful stories about them all. Sandra Bulloch, Archie Manning, Ann Rice, John Goodman and Nicholas Cage all own homes here. It was a great afternoon!

I love that there is live music in random places

It's always Mardi Gras

You can rent these little cars to zip around - but you still have to park them!

On our way to lunch, we passed a store with unique items. I guessed that it was a Miss America crown. It was actually a Mardi Gras queen crown - and had a $1600 price tag.

Gina recommended this restaurant for lunch. It was great!

And now to the Garden District...

We couldn't go into the cemetery, so our guide told us all about it just outside the gate.

We could see some of the old gravesites - many are still used by the families who own them.
