We left yesterday morning at 8:00, hoping for calmer seas but with
everything put away. The weather was gorgeous, the seas were lightly rolling, the wind was refreshing - a perfect day for cruising. That is always subject to change, so we were planning to go all the way to NYC with a back-up plan of Atlantic Highlands. Rob and Debbie aboard
Lady Royal, have been cruising with us the last couple of days. It's nice to have a buddy boat in the ocean. They were headed for Atlantic Highlands and we cruised together until they turned off.
The fishermen were out in full force! Mostly there were individual boats, but there were a few large boats that were literally covered with people fishing! As we got closer to our destination, the water traffic picked up and included ships, barges and ferries, along with the usual pleasure craft.
To get to our marina, we passed the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, an old terminal where rail cars were ferried across, and two old forts. I will look those up before we leave. We are across the Hudson River from Manhattan - the lights of the city last night were beautiful! So was the sunset over New Jersey!
We plan to spend a few days here seeing the sights. Today we are going to a Yankees baseball game. To get there we will take a ferry that will put us off near Ground Zero, which is one of the things we wanted to see. We will take some time there and go by Trinity Episcopal Church nearby on our way to the subway station.
Steve wants to visit Fraunces Tavern, a museum, restaurant and headquarters of Sons of the Revolution, of which Steve is a member. I am looking forward to spending several hours in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We will probably do all that tomorrow. Beyond that - who knows?
