As we prepared to leave Marathon, I moved the dinghy to the other side of the boat. Steve called for me to bring the camera - now! A barnacle crusted manatee (our second one) had been enjoying the shade under the dinghy. It slowly cruised over toward another boat, but I got some good pictures.
It was a fairly short cruising day to Matecumbe Bight, just short of Islamorada. We anchored out near the beach house of Steve's college buddy, Danny. You may remember that when my dad and Sa were with us we drove to Islamorada and visited a gallery that sells the artwork of Sandy Keil, Danny's wife. The gallery is managed by Larry, also a friend of Danny's. Larry lives in the beach house, and dinghied out to see us after work that day. He and his girlfriend Sandra came back later for dinner. We had a great time!
The next day, we had an even shorter cruise to Islamorada. We dinghied in to Lorelei's for dinner and drinks. I took photos of people at the table next to us and they wanted to return the favor. We ran into Twila and Mike from Nauti Nell and spoke to them for a while. Lorelei's is apparently the place to be and be seen - a pink cadillac boat rode by just to wave!
The trip from Islamorada to Key Largo was a little longer. It was very shallow in places, so we had to be careful. We went through mangroves and large waterways - a little bit of everything. Along the way, we went through a sailing lesson. We couldn't help it; they were in the channel!
We arrived at Islamorada without incident. It was very windy, with more wind and some bad weather to come. We will wait out the bad weather here and leave Monday or Tuesday.

and open water. |
|
Lots of wind for parasailing |
|
and for sailing |
|
The channel is maybe not such a good place to practice sailing |

We managed to avoid running over any of them |

This guy sailed through a narrow channel - we were impressed! |

Here we are! |

A large airboat came in this morning - note how the water is pretty wild |

And here it comes! Yeah, we're just sitting tight. |
